Before assuming the position in King William, Ashcraft previously held three appointed administrative positions in local government. Beginning his appointed career, Ashcraft served as City Manager of Clarksburg, West Virginia from December 27, 1995, through October 1, 1999.

The first Superintendent of Schools in King William County was Mr. R.L. Williams, who was appointed to the post in September 1870 by Governor Gilbert Carlton Walker. The present King William High School building was erected in 1925. Previously, it was known as the Central High School and located at Sharon Church. [4]
King William is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of King William County, Virginia, United States. [1] The population as of the 2010 census was 252. [ 2 ] Located in King William is the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the United States, built in 1725.
The King William Academy was initially erected on the property of Dr. Holmes and his wife, Martha Bundy Holmes. Students throughout King William and King & Queen Counties attended the school with some students actually boarding with the Holmes' and other families in close proximity to the Academy.
