Shell Beach, located on the Atlantic coast of Guyana in the Barima-Waini Region, near the Venezuelan border, is a nesting site for four of the eight sea turtle species - the Green, Hawksbill turtle, Leatherback and the Olive Ridley. [2] Shell Beach extends for approximately 120 km. [3]
Barima-Waini is a heavily forested region. The Atlantic coastal strip of Region One features a number of beaches, including, from west to east, Almond Beach, Luri Beach, Shell Beach, Turtle Beach, Foxes Beach, Iron-punt Beach, Pawpaw Beach and Father's Beach. Marine turtles nest on some of these beaches.
There are several protected areas of Guyana. The oldest protected area is the Kaieteur National Park which covers 627 square kilometres (242 sq mi). [1] In 2011, the National Protected Areas System (NPAS) was established. [2] As of 2020, about 8.4% of the country is protected. [3]
