I have done it successfully by hand on the bench grinder, but only for two flute end mills above about 10mm diameter. Would like a jig of some sort to handle the growing collection of 4 flute and smaller diameter one i've blunted. There was a video on YouTube of someone using a die grinder in the lathe tool post with the end mill in the chuck.
The finger tool rest is placed about 1/16” in front of the wheel and about 1/64” away from the outer edge of the wheel. This position is such that when drawing the flute across the grinding wheel, The end mill will be clear of the wheel before dropping off the finger. The grinding head is pivoted 5 degrees as in the above image.

Set the “tilt” to zero, the “rotary table” to 30 degrees, and the tool flat to the “table” (5C rotation=0). Now rotate the 5C 5 degrees and grind the left face. Next rotate the 5C -175 degrees from original zero and grind the right face. But, I understand you should grind into the cutting edge and the right side is backwards.
1. I have 5c collet blocks, square and hex to hold end mills and such in those. 2. I have a Phase 2 end mill grinder to grind the sides of the endmills 3. I have a Drill Dr 750X for grinding the drill bit ends 4. I can use my original lathe toolpost (the non-quick change type) or even the AXA tool holders to hold the tool bits
The 4 face grinding process requires no repositioning for each face. The settings are set. Then one feeds the wheel in and makes a swinging motion with the attachment. Both faces on one side of the drill are ground as well as the web is defined. Then one turns the drill around, repeats those moves and it's done.
I ended up marking the 4 positions for grinding a four flute end mill with a sharpie so I could see them. Here it is on the grinder in the two positions for cutting the two angles for each flute. The thumb screw on the end locks the rotating collar into position. Its sometimes hard to get it to lock it into the right location.
Depends on how much you need to take off to get is sharp again. It's better to touch them up when they just start getting dull rather than beat the tar out of them and have to take a lot off. It's nice to have a healthy selection of undersize end mills for manual machines. I use more re-sharpened ones than new/full size ones.
8,031. Nov 5, 2012. #2. That fixture is only for sharpening the end of the end mill. It is an attachment for a surface grinder. The flutes require a fixture that allows the end mill to twist along the spiral edge of the flutes, with a small finger tracing the helix. There are also two angles involved there as well.
Nov 25, 2023. #4. If the edges are worn or broken on my carbide end mills, I regrind the tip edges by offhand grinding. on a diamond wheel so at least it will cut. You lose the 90 degree corner but the end mill is at least still usable. Otherwise it is half way into it being a quandary or even possibly a predicament.
