The Société Française de Fabrication de Bébés et Jouets ("French Concern for Manufacturing Dolls and Toys" often referred to by its initials.S.F.B.J.) was a large doll making consortium founded in France by the union of a number of major French doll companies including Jumeau and Bru and the Franco-German doll company Fleischmann & Bloedel in 1899.
They are generally considered the most desirable dolls by collectors and demand the highest price of any dolls. On March 29, 2014, an A. Marque doll, a boy number 27, set the world record for an antique doll at auction by Theriault's, fetching US$300,000. This broke the previous world record of US$263,000 —- also for an A. Marque doll. [6]
French 1860-1890 fashion dolls are commonly worth over US$2000, and dolls from well-known doll makers like Jumeau, Bru, and Huret can be worth over US$20,000. [2] [10] Among the French Bébés early dolls from Jumeau and Bru generally go for several thousand dollars, while later S.F.B.J dolls may be worth only a few hundred. [2]
Dolls are also collected by adults, for their nostalgic value, beauty, historical importance or financial value. [54] Antique dolls originally made as children's playthings have become collector's items. Nineteenth-century bisque dolls made by French manufacturers such as Bru and Jumeau may be worth almost $22,000 today. [55]
The Jumeau company first emerged as a partnership between Louis-Desire Belton and Pierre-François Jumeau in Paris in the early 1840s. [3] In 1844, Belton and Jumeau presented their dolls at the Paris Exposition (at which they received an honorable mention), but, by 1846, Belton's name was no longer associated with the dolls, and Jumeau was trading in his own right. [4]
These predecessors include Carl Bergner of Germany, who made a three-faced doll with one face of a crying black child and the other two, happier white faces. In 1892, Jumeau of Paris advertised Black and mixed-race dolls with bisque heads. Gebruder Heubach of Germany made character faces in bisque. Other European doll makers include Bru Jne.
