Savage 12VLP Varmint Series, Bolt Action, .223 Remington, 26" Barrel, 5+1 Rounds 1:7 twist runs around 949.54 sportsman warehouse I know it can be found other places but and come in a 1:9 twist as well. But i like heavier bullets. It's where I bought mine 26" heavy barrel the picture on the site was from another forum.
The only gun that I know of that accepts AR style mags is the Mossberg. Howa might make one, if so, the Howa would be my choice. I hadn't thought of Howa. I did some research. Howa does make a nice bolt action .223 but it uses their proprietary magazine. Too bad.
Apr 11, 2019. #13. It's a bit fast but I've been running a rock creek 1/6.5 twist in a M24 contour specifically setup for the new smk 95gr. If you want to really get the most distance from your 223 the 95gr w/ a G7 b.c. of .310 & velocity of 2675fps keeps a bullet supersonic to 1200+ yrds at sea level.
Buy a barrel blank in the Remington contour and chamber to the .223 Wilde. While the rifle is apart, the action can be trued. Face off the reciever., lap the bolt lugs to the action and surface grind the recoil lug the insure that it is square. I have found that found that the new Remingtons take very little trueing.
At equal price points for fully assembled rifles, 223 Rem chambered bolt actions are likely higher quality than 5.56mm chambered ARs. Also there is a slim-to-none chance of finding a 223 Rem bolt action with a chrome lined barrel, which is somewhat common in 5.56mm ARs.
It is still all factory except for the trigger weight adjustment to 3 lbs. and I like it a lot. The Left-hand Ruger American 223 Rem I bought for my 6 year old granddaughter shoots better but, for over a third more than the cost of the Compass 223. Both shoot sub-MOA but, the Ruger shoots 1/2 MOA, and for 5 rounds.

You might want to reread and edit. You're recommending the same 1:8 twist for both the heavies and the 55's. Berger recommends 1:12 twist rate for their heaviest .22cal bullets and 1:15 for their lightest .22's. According to Nosler 1:12 is the standard for the caliber but suggests a faster twist for their 60gr.
That is just my best guess. I have a 5.56 chambered bolt action with a 24" barrel and a 5.56 chambered AR with a 16" barrel. The difference in muzzle velocity between the two, using the same load, is around 300 fps. Based on that, I would expect you to lose around 150fps by going to the 20" barrel.
Sep 29, 2021. #1. Anyone have information on subsonic loads for 223/5.56 using H4895 or other powders with 65gr/69gr/75gr bullets for use suppressed? I know H4895 has been the Military's main powder since WWII and heard that it works well with under charged loads and less than 1,000fps. Trying to get something a little quieter for my 223/5.56 SBR.
