Leland Township: The first Riverside Inn was constructed in 1902 by Jacob Schwarz, who passed it to his daughters Blanche and Anna after his death. The Detroit-Leland Hotel is a historic hotel located at 400 Bagley Street in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It is the oldest continuously operating hotel in downtown Detroit, [2] and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. [1] The ballroom of the Detroit-Leland has hosted a nightclub, the Leland City Club, since 1983. [3]
The Leland Historic District is a historic district roughly bounded by the park, Main Street, Avenue A, and the harbor, in Leland, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 [ 2 ] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. [ 1 ]
Where the Leland (Carp) River flows into Lake Michigan, there was a natural fish ladder (which was a traditional Native American fishing grounds). The settlement was called Mishi-me-go-bing , meaning "the place where canoes run up into the river to land, because they have no harbor", or alternatively Che-ma-go-bing or Chi-mak-a-ping .

[2] The building was moved to face the river, an upper story was added, and the interior was reworked to make a new inn. Blanche and Anna ran the inn until 1957.
