Summative assessment, summative evaluation, or assessment of learning [1] is the assessment of participants in an educational program. Summative assessments are designed both to assess the effectiveness of the program and the learning of the participants.
The following standardized tests are designed and/or administered by state education agencies and/or local school districts in order to measure academic achievement across multiple grade levels in elementary, middle and senior high school, as well as for high school graduation examinations to measure proficiency for high school graduation.
The formative assessments aim is to see if the students understand the instruction before doing a summative assessment. [10] (3) Summative assessment – This is generally carried out at the end of a course or project. In an educational setting, summative assessments are typically used to assign students a course grade, and are evaluative.
The purpose of standards-based assessment [5] is to connect evidence of learning to learning outcomes (the standards). When standards are explicit and clear, the learner becomes aware of their achievement with reference to the standards, and the teacher may use assessment data to give meaningful feedback to students about this progress.
The Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA): The BSRA is a widely used kindergarten readiness test that measures a child's exposure to concepts that support learning at school. It contains five subtests assessing knowledge of colors, letters, numbers/counting, size/comparisons, and shapes.
Between the years of 1995-1996 the PIAT-R was restandardized as part of a renorming program which included other assessments in use at the time. [4] The new version, PIAT-R/NU, included an older age group. The 18-22 year old group from the sample included students in high school, 2- year colleges, 4-year colleges, as well as some nonstudents. Understanding the differences between quantitative data vs. qualitative data, as well as formative assessment vs. summative assessment that tease out this data can be defined as assessment literacy. [5] Building assessment literacy also includes knowing when to use which type of assessment and the resulting data to use to inform instruction.
