Andreas Stihl (10 November 1896 – 14 January 1973) was a Swiss-born German engineer and important inventor in the area of chainsaws, and the founder of Andreas Stihl AG & Company KG. [1] He is often hailed as the "Father of the chainsaw".
The company also produced Yanmar tractors and STIHL power tools. [6] Some of the engines are made by a joint venture company, Perkins Shibaura Engines, founded in October 1994 and opened in 1996. [7] In April 2005, the company won The Queen's Award for Enterprise: International Trade (Export) (2005). [2]
The company, now operating as Festool, produces portable power tools. Other important contributors to the modern chainsaw are Joseph Buford Cox and Andreas Stihl ; the latter patented and developed an electric chainsaw for use on bucking sites in 1926 [ 13 ] and a gasoline-powered chainsaw in 1929, and founded a company to mass-produce them.
