Isaac Herring entered the first land in what became Herrin on 4 November 1816, two years before Illinois became a state. He paid $2 an acre for the 160 acres (65 ha). At the time he lived to the west in Jackson County , the land entry was the northeast quarter off Section 30, Township 8 South, Range 2 East of the Third Principal Meridian . [ 5 ]
Herrin High School Boys track team won IHSA Class A state track titles in 2007, 2008 and once again in 2010. The Basketball team has also enjoyed numerous successes over the years, winning the IHSA state title in 1957 over Collinsville by a score of 45 to 42, under Earl Lee.
Eli met his wife, Jennifer Anderson, at church while at BYU, and they married in July 1992. They now have seven children. He is now a school teacher and assistant football coach at Mountain View High School in Orem, Utah. His parents are David and Lynn Herring. Herring's younger brother, Isaac, also played on BYU's offensive line from 1999 to 2002.

He played basketball for Herrin High School from 1955 to 1957, leading the school to a 28–3 record as a junior and 31–2 as a senior. In 1957, the 6 feet, 4 inch Tidwell was the tallest player and the high scorer for the Herrin High School team that won the Illinois state basketball championship. [ 1 ]
