Excelsior College Examinations (or ECE) are a series of eight, three-credit nursing theory tests offered by Excelsior College in Albany, New York. The exams are supported by corresponding online courses. Excelsior also offers the Clinical Performance in Nursing Exam, a two-day practical skills exam, as a capstone to the associate degree in nursing.
The program is an extensive series of 33 examinations in college subject areas comparable to the final or end-of-course examinations in undergraduate college courses. [1] These tests are frequently used in conjunction with CLEP ( College Level Examination Program ) tests by students pursuing college degrees in non-traditional formats.
This program was an outgrowth of the practice of giving World War II veterans school and college credit in recognition of their military education and experience. In 1963 the Regents introduced College Proficiency Examinations, now called Excelsior College Examinations (ECEs), initially to help teachers and nurses complete educational requirements.
Excelsior Pass verifications retrieved after Dec. 11 will expire on March 31, 2022, according to the state. Excelsior Pass Plus does not expire. Excelsior Pass Plus does not expire.
These tests assess college-level knowledge in thirty-six subject areas and provide a mechanism for earning college credits without taking college courses. They are administered at more than 1,700 sites (colleges, universities, and military installations) across the United States. There are about 2,900 colleges which grant CLEP credit. [4]
To maintain the scholarship, Excelsior students must maintain 30 annual class credits at a state college: State University of New York (SUNY) or City University of New York (CUNY). [2] There will also be a GPA requirement. [3] After graduation, Excelsior students must live and work in New York for as many years as they received the scholarship. [2]
In April 1998, the Board of Regents granted the school a charter to operate as an independent institution. On January 1, 2001, Regents College became Excelsior College. (Excelsior means "ever upwards" in Latin; it is the motto of the State of New York.) Excelsior College changed its name to Excelsior University on August 1, 2022. [3]
