J.H. Rose High School was established in 1957 on South Elm Street, in Greenville, North Carolina. Students that made up the original student body came from the former Greenville High School in downtown Greenville. Students from the former historically black C. M. Eppes High School were integrated in during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

On September 10, 1928, the new school opened with 257 students and nine teachers. [6] In 1929 a second unit was constructed that added 19,360 sq.ft. A training school wing was added in 1949, a theater in 1951 and a laboratory in 1971. [7] In 1959, the school was renamed Wahl-Coates Laboratory School in honor of two of its early teachers.

The entire project cost approximately $28 million. The school first Principal was Mr. Art Rouse and Assistant Principal was Mrs. Singleton. The rival high schools D.H. Conley and J.H. Rose and the feeder middle schools A.G. Cox and CM Eppes helped with the naming of the school.
