Definition of Spawn: Spawn is a type of medium present in mushroom tissue that propagates the fungus such as Trichoderma which is the root system of mushrooms. [ 5 ] Mycelium, or actively growing mushroom culture, is placed on a substrate—usually sterilized grains such as rye or millet—and induced to grow into those grains.
To produce shiitake mushrooms, 1 metre (3-foot) hardwood logs with a diameter ranging between 10–15 cm (4–6 in) are inoculated with the mycelium of the shiitake fungus. Inoculation is completed by drilling holes in hardwood logs, filling the holes with cultured shiitake mycelium or inoculum, and then sealing the filled holes with hot wax.

Very distinctive fungus. Typically grows on conifer logs and stumps. Gray fire morel, Morchella tomentosa: Very dark colored when young, but lightens with age. Considered one of the most desirable edible fungi in the area. Early false morel, Verpa bohemica: One of the first mushrooms to emerge in the late spring or early summer.
