Des Moines Area Community College was created on March 18, 1966. [3] The first classes were held on the Ankeny [4] Campus in 1968. DMACC has experienced tremendous growth in the last two decades. In the fall of 2000, 10,803 students were enrolled at DMACC. By the fall of 2011, that number grew to 25,425.
The buildings built from the 1920s on were, for the most part, built along Euclid Avenue. Euclid was transformed from a residential street into a state highway at this time. Highland Park is the largest neighborhood-centered commercial district in the Des Moines area. [2] The district remains largely intact with only a few lots that are vacant.
The contributing buildings are the last remaining warehouse and manufacturing buildings that are left on the near east side of Des Moines. [3] The contributing structures include two railroad bridges and a pump house and the contributing sites are the locations of extant or former railroad rail bed and rail siding segments.
The college was closed in 1929 and the business district continued to serve the residents of the neighborhood. The extension of the Second Avenue street car line in the early 20th century helped develop and sustain the neighborhood. In 1954 the college campus was sold to a developer who built Park Fair Shopping Center on the site.
