The American Quarter Horse, or Quarter Horse, is an American breed of horse that excels at sprinting short distances. Its name is derived from its ability to outrun other horse breeds in races of 1 ⁄ 4 mi (0.40 km) or less; some have been clocked at speeds up to 44 mph (71 km/h). A breed registry was founded in 1954, and within 15 years had registered 15,000 ponies. Today, the Pony of the Americas Club is one of the largest and most active youth-oriented horse breed registrie in the US. Although called ponies, POAs have the phenotype of a small horse, combining mainly Arabian and American Quarter Horse attributes.
Driftwood made a name for himself in the late 1930s as a rodeo horse, when he was known as '"Speedy". [1] He was owned by a man named Asbury Schell, who calf roped, team tied, steer roped and bulldogged off the stallion he called Speedy, as well as occasionally stock saddle races.
Traveler (died 1912), was a foundation sire of the American Quarter Horse breed, but mystery surrounds him as his breeding is completely unknown. [1] It is reported that Traveler was born around 1880 in upstate New York, and was shipped in a boxcar to Texas in the early 1880s to pull Fresno scrapers for the Union Pacific Railroad.
