Symptoms: I got a check engine light, read it with an OBD scanner - confirmed P0442. I wasn't too surprised by this. I wasn't too surprised by this. I had been having a smell of gas coming from some where near the rear tank that could be smelled between the cab and bed as well as in the driver side rear wheel well.
Start with vacuum hose check. Spray brake cleaner on hoses with engine running. If RPM increase you found a leak. Replace vac lines with Thick wall Silicone kit. $90. Denso Purge Selnoid. Smoke test the EVAP. Worst case the top of fuel tank is corroded.

Not a Day after new front Struts and the engine light comes on. I'm at 120,000 and have had the light come on before for the front exhaust sensor. PO456, Autozone's Reader said it could be: Faulty Fuel Cap, EVAP Line Linkage, Pump Module Failure, or Canister Faulty. Indeed I do occasionally smell gas (recent).

Let me get this right - you guys are leaking gas out of the tank. Filling it halfway instead of all the way keeps the leak to a minimum. This won't solve my evap system leak and subsequent check engine light. I need to pass an emissions test in 3 months so the filling half way won't fix the CEL which will prevent a pass on the test

I had the same thing happen to me and went to the dealership (toyota dealership) ,,the parts man said it was my gas cap. I bought a new Toyota gas cap and that resolved the check engine and traction lights coming on. Saved a bunch of money,the dealership I bought it from (not a toyota dealer) wanted $100.+ dollars just to tell me what it was.
