Montezuma is a town in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica which began as a remote fishing village and has gained popularity since the 1980s among tourists on a budget. Montezuma is located near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 41 km (25 mi) southwest of Paquera and 8 km (5 mi) south of the town of Cóbano. Most services are in Cóbano.
The Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve is a Nature Reserve of Costa Rica, part of the Tempisque Conservation Area in the province of Puntarenas, covering an area of 3,140 acres (12.7 km 2) terrestrial and 4,420 acres (17.9 km 2) marine on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula near Montezuma-Cabuya and Mal Pais.

The canyon crosses the Mexico–United States border, between Tijuana, Baja California, and San Diego, California, and Smuggler's Gulch is the part of the canyon on the US side of the border. It may also be called Cañón del Matadero [2] or Valle Montezuma [3] in Spanish, but these names apply more generally to the whole canyon.
It is composed of four volcanic peaks and two twin craters, one of which is sometimes referred to as the Montezuma Volcano. [2] The formation occupies a 225 km² area. In the lowest areas there is savanna, rain forest in the middle areas and cloud forest at the top. The rivers Tenorio, Tenorito and Martirio have their source in this volcano.
