TCC's creation was authorized by voters in 1962, and it opened in fall 1965. On 7 December 1966 the Pearl A. Wanamaker Library at Tacoma Community College was named and Pearl Anderson Wanamaker was an honoured guest. [1] As of 2009, nearly 1/2 million students have attended TCC since its opening.

Since 2002 the college has undergone an extensive construction program to convert what was once a World War II navy supply base into a modern, pedestrian-oriented campus. The college employs 431 full- and part-time faculty, exempt and classified salaried employees. CPTC also manages the Northwest Career & Technical High School.
