Fansipan (Vietnamese: Phan Xi Păng, listen ⓘ) is a mountain in Vietnam. Its height was 3,143 metres (10,312 ft) in 1909, and it presently stands at 3,147.3 metres (10,326 ft). [ 1 ] It is the highest mountain on the Indochinese peninsula (comprising Vietnam, Laos , and Cambodia ), hence its nickname, "the Roof of Indochina".
The geology of Vietnam is divided into five structural blocks : Northeast (NE), Northwest (NW), Truongson, Kon Tum and Nambo. The NE block is a part of the South China plate, in which strata and igneous rocks have been found dating from the Early Paleozoic to the Quaternary. The NW and Truongson blocks are regarded as NW-SE trending Paleozoic ...
The rising hot material weakens the lithosphere, making the separation of plates easier. [6] The flow of hot plume material creates volcanism under the continental lithosphere. Iceland extends across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a divergent plate boundary, and it separates the Eurasian and North American plates.
Today, the Grenville orogen is marked by northwest verging fold-and-thrust belts and high pressure metamorphic regimes, as well as distinctive AMCG suite magmatism. Metamorphism is commonly of amphibolite and granulite facies , that is, medium to high temperature and pressure alteration.
Cratons of South America and Africa during the Triassic Period when the two continents were joined as part of the Pangea supercontinent. A craton (/ ˈ k r eɪ t ɒ n / KRAYT-on, / ˈ k r æ t ɒ n / KRAT-on, or / ˈ k r eɪ t ən / KRAY-tən; [1] [2] [3] from Ancient Greek: κράτος kratos "strength") is an old and stable part of the continental lithosphere, which consists of Earth's two ...
Pangaea formed during the closure of the Rheic Ocean 330 Mya (early Carboniferous). View centred on 30°S, 30°E. The subduction of the Iapetus Ocean resulted in the first contact between Laurussia and Gondwana in the Late Devonian and terminated in full collision or the Variscan orogeny in the early Carboniferous (340 Mya). The rapidly accelerating complex of landslides in Rancho Palos Verdes has created an unforeseen outcome: a new coastline as the seafloor is pushed upward.
Most of the oceanic plates that formed the ocean floor of Panthalassa have been subducted and so traditional plate tectonic reconstructions based on magnetic anomalies can therefore be used only for remains from the Cretaceous and later.
