Make your pfp the target size for discord pfp. Making it too large (i.e. 1000x1000) will look bad when it gets compressed and shrunk to 128x128 or 256x256. Similarly making it too small makes it look bad too.

I would honestly just recommend cropping parts out of an image/wallpaper rather than specifically looking for pfp it most of the time looks much better. As for loss in quality save the file and then after cropping make sure to save it as a png to preserve as much as possible.
