Springfield has been doing the Milspec since the mid 80s and was like your basic as you note, mid 80s Colts. The GI came about as a WWII era type with the tiny GI sights and other basic 1911A1 style trim. It was similar to a USGI gun in that it made a lot of people happy, but far enough that diehards hated it.
Springfield has different models of 1911's which vary in price from a little over $500 up to $1300 in the production range. Obviously the higher end's like the TRP and TM have more features but the GI and Mil-Specs are also good guns for the price.
My TRP was worth the extra over the Loaded. I paid $1100 vs $925. I prefer front-strap checkering, and that's at least a $150 option from most after-market shops.
Springfield Armory. Always my first choice for a 1911. For me to choose a Ruger 1911, the other choice would have to be Taurus. I don't care for their company or their products, other than their .22 pistols and, more or less, the single action revolvers.
Several years ago, Springfield cut all ties with Imbel. Imbel made all pretty much all SA 1911's, or parts. The N and WW serial numbered guns were fully built in Brazil by Im
With a huge selection of handguns and rifles, Springfield Armory is the premier manufacturer of quality firearms for concealed carry, home defense, hunting and competitive shooting.
On my Springfield Garrison 1911 I would suggest a Wilson combat 13lb recoil spring upgrade and oil it up with plenty of ammo and will do fine. The only issue I had was feeding issues. The recoil spring that came with it was a 9# spring went to a 13# recoil spring kit and it is so much smoother. Love it
If there is one thing everybody in the precision pistol community agreed on, it was that when somebody asks "what reasonably-priced 1911 can I buy that's good enough to start bullseye competition" the only answer was "Springfield Range Officer." And no, a Colt Gold Cup isn't it's equal, even at nearly twice the price.
The XDM is available as an 'Elite; model in 10 MM in 3.8" and 4.5" models, but not 5.25". I do not own a Springfield XDM10 Elite, but do own XDM10's of 'regular' ilk, in 5.35" and 4.5", I also own Glocks in 20 and 29 editions. Finally I own a fine EAA Witness Elite in 10 MM. If I could only own one of those five, it would be the XDM10 5.25.
