Grandwizard Theodore & the Fantastic Five (also known as the Fantastic Freaks or simply Fantastic Five) was an old school hip hop group, best known for their 12" single, "Can I Get A Soul Clap" [1] The group also appeared in the film Wild Style [2] and recorded a song in 1994 with the Cold Crush Brothers and Terminator X which appeared on Terminator X's album, Super Bad.
In the early 1980s, Theodore was a part of the group Grandwizard Theodore & the Fantastic Five. They released "Can I Get a Soul Clap" in 1982. [5] He was also featured in the 1983 film Wild Style, as well as contributing to the film's soundtrack. He explains the origin of the scratch in the documentary, Scratch. [2]
The album has been described by Leo Stanley from Allmusic as "one of the key records of early-'80s hip-hop". Fresh sampled the phrase, "Oh My God!" for his now classic hip hop classic single, The Show, released in 1985.
In a 2002 interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, the group explained the origin of their name. Chali 2na said "I played the song to my friend's mother and she made a joke: 'You guys think you sound like the Fantastic Five, but you sound more like the Jurassic Five.' And we started laughing but, well, the name stuck." [6]
The Fantastic Five's series lasted only five issues, but they remained recurring characters in the Spider-Girl title, which lasted for 100 issues in its first volume.
