Glen Arbor Township: This inn, originally called the "Sleeping Bear House," was built in 1857 by C.C. McCarthy. It operated as a boarding house and hotel through the rest of the 19th century, and well into the 20th. It eventually closed in 1973, and was purchased, along with the remainder of Glen Haven, by the National Park Service. 23
In 1857, Glen Haven, was founded as a settlement called Sleeping Bearville when C. C. McCarty, brother-in-law of Glen Arbor pioneer John E. Fisher, built a saw mill and inn on the beach there. [2] [3] By 1881, there were 11 buildings in the community. Over years the timberline receded away from the shore and steamer firewood became scarce.
The Michigan Constitution and state statutes limit the amount of property tax millage that townships can levy for general township operations. General law townships are allocated at least 1 mill from the constitutionally limited 15/18 mills allocated among townships, the county, public schools and the intermediate school district.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 30.9 square miles (80 km 2), of which 20.1 square miles (52 km 2) is land and 10.8 square miles (28 km 2) (35.08%) is water. Elmwood Township lies upon the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. Part of Lake Leelanau is located within the far northwest of Elmwood Township.
