Sourceforge is a website on the internet where open source programmers can host their programs/work so that other programmers and users can download it. This service is open and free for users. The controversy is that earlier this week developers for a popular program named Notepad++ have announced they were leaving the platform.
keturn. • 5 yr. ago. Sourceforge was once one of the most popular sites for distributing open source software. Then for a while there were dark times when they included adware. Reportedly they've cut that out, but the damage to their reputation was done. Almost no-one publishes to them any more, I expect the place is a ghost town.
SourceForge and Slashdot were bought out early last year and one of the new owner's first moves was to clear all the SourceForge-bundled garbage from the installers. Developers can still include their own adware, same as they could if they hosted it anywhere else, but SourceForge itself no longer injects any junk into the downloads.
Sourceforge was the first large code repository with features like issue tracking and source control. Anything up to this point were bare archives like FTP & GOPHER sites where you could download stuff and that was it. If you are looking for material design and flair, open source usually isn't the place to find it.

Sourceforge willingly packaged spyware with its downloads and tried to take away owner control of the setup file, whereas the worst you could say about fosshub is that they made security mistakes and got embroiled in (mostly exaggerated) controversy - nowhere close to sourceforge's level of outright customer-antagonism. 2.

I agree with u/aureianimus, SourceForge has falled. I like Gitlab or Github myself, though I lean toward Gitlab slightly. Sourceforge is no longer an option. The question is now github or gitlab. GitHub, no question. unquestionably GitHub. GitHub has been the de facto standard for the last, oh, eight years or so.
