Jamukha was born in the Jadaran, a sub-tribe of the Khamag Mongol confederation, and was an anda (i.e. blood brother) to Temüjin.. According to The Secret History of the Mongols, when Börte, wife of Temüjin, and Sochigel, his step-mother, were abducted, by the Three Merkits; Wang Khan, Jamukha and Temüjin combined forces against the Merkits to recover Börte.
Genghis Khan [a] (born Temüjin; c. 1162 – August 1227), also known as Chinggis Khan, [b] was the founder and first khan of the Mongol Empire. After spending most of his life uniting the Mongol tribes, he launched a series of military campaigns, conquering large parts of China and Central Asia.
The Battle of Chakirmaut was the concluding battle of Genghis Khan's unification of the Mongol tribes. [2] [3] Temujin, as Genghis was then known, fought and defeated the combined forces of coalition of tribes led by the Naimans under Tayang Khan and his son Kuchlug and rival Khan claimant Jamukha.
Decades later, Temujin, the son of Yesugei and Hö'elün, married Börte. Soon after, Börte was kidnapped by the Merkit as revenge for the kidnapping of Hö'elün. [2] Temujin managed to rescue her, with the help of his friend Jamukha and the Keraite ruler Toghrul. As Temujin rose to power, Jamukha and Toghrul came to oppose him. [3]
Although Temüjin and Jamukha were close friends for many years, they began to drift apart as time went on. Central to this split was the political system each of them supported—Jamukha held up the traditional Mongol aristocracy , whereas Temüjin believed that a meritocracy would be best.
Toghrul was, like Jamukha, blood-brother of Temujin. He led the coalition against Merkits when Temujin's wife Börte was abducted in 1183, [9] joined by his brother Jakha Gambhu, Jamukha and Temujin. Two of the tribal chiefs, Dair Usun and Toqto'a fled the camp, probably informed by people who had seen the army move.
