It does not use special symbols or diacritics apart from the schwa (ə), which is used for the first sound in the word "about". A pronunciation respelling for English is a notation used to convey the pronunciation of words in the English language, which do not have a phonemic orthography (i.e. the spelling does not reliably indicate pronunciation). There are two basic types of pronunciation respelling:
Multiple differences. Older Americans may use the British pronunciation, and some British dialects use the American pronunciation. BrE approximates more to French [aʒaksjo]; AmE reflects the word's Italian origin [aˈjattʃo] . The original Portuguese pronunciation is [alˈɣaɾvɨ] .
Normally, pronunciation is given only for the subject of the article in its lead section. For non-English words and names, use the pronunciation key for the appropriate language. If a common English rendering of the non-English name exists (Venice, Nikita Khrushchev), its pronunciation, if necessary, should be indicated before the non-English one.
Throughout Wikipedia, the pronunciation of words is indicated using the International Phonetic Alphabet ( IPA ). The following tables list the IPA symbols used for English words and pronunciations. Please note that several of these symbols are used in ways that are specific to Wikipedia, and differ from those used by dictionaries.
English phonology is the system of speech sounds used in spoken English. Like many other languages, English has wide variation in pronunciation, both historically and from dialect to dialect. In general, however, the regional dialects of English share a largely similar (but not identical) phonological system.
