Depending on which Volquartsen you're looking at, it's probably as good as anything else. My Black Mamba is great for Steel Challenge, but doesn't seem to do anything special or any better than my MK III 22/45 LITE or for that matter my 422's. One of these days, I'll pick up a threaded barrel for my 41's, but until then I'll roll with the others.
The good news is the volquartsen parts and additional barrel shimming took it from about 40% reliability to 100% for feeding, ignition and extraction. I did suffer about 22 "harder than normal to feed/close bolt" with the off brands, noticeably the federal and remington crap.
Volquartsen Deluxe Pros-Hailed as the most reliable and accurate of the semi auto .22s, comes with McMillan sporter stock Cons-More money, longer lead time when customized Volquartsen Summit Pros-Lightweight, single action (supposedly more accurate than the semi auto Deluxe), can buy as barreled action only (so similar price to Kidd) Cons
What are the other top options that I can compare it to? Wanting a 22 optic ready pistol for when I take out family & friends for plinking that are new to shooting but also something that I can use for rimfire steel competitions. Are there any other 22’s are out there that can compete with the Volquartsen Scorpion or Mamba?
Volquartsen's 22 upper are solid, accurate shooters. I think their comps are a waste of time. Their idea is to have weight hanging off the front to minimize muzzle rise. It works, but slows transitions. That being said, I see lots of Mambas, Scorpions and LLV uppers of various frames at every SCSA match.
I have been investigating the Volquartsen recently and spoke with the shop. 1) The barrels on the standard 17 HMR's are threaded into the receiver. 2) The back of the receiver is full height so a 10/22 Mag stock would have to be relieved to fit.
Using the 2 Volquartsen mags that came with it and 4 standard Ruger Mark IV mags bought new. Ran it for 100rds before cleaning, did a take down, clean and oiled. Using Wilson Ultra lube 2 standard (not lite.) Typically run a bore snake a few times through it after every session and wipe it down.
I did have a magazine spring break last week in the middle of a match which was really strange. It was one of the original Volquartsen magazines. I got the Tandemkross green springs and red extra round followers in my Ruger mags and just bought a couple more to put in the mags the Volquartsen shipped with. Blazer .22lr (Crazy smokey)
I am ready to buy a Volquartsen mamba. I am trying to decide between the 3.5" Mini Mamba versus the 4.5 in barrel version. I've had a 6-in barreled Smith& Wesson victory 22 and I just sold a Ruger silencer shop 3" Mark IV. I had both those pistols purely to suppress and I have to say I was a little disappointed in the mark. 4.
Volquartsen sear, hammer, bushing, springs, trigger (basically the accurising kit) Rim edge thumb rest and cmore mount (didn't go 90 mount but might later) Houge grips. Lci removal plate. Extended mag bases. Hoping for a nice short 2-2.5lb trigger and most of all a reliable steel gun. I shot it this week.
