This building was a victim of the county seat rivalry that moved the Jackson County seat between Bellevue (1838–48), Andrew (1848-51), Bellevue again (1851–61), Andrew once more (1861-73), finally ending up in Maquoketa in 1873.
Spring Side is a historic residence located just outside of Bellevue, Iowa, United States. The house was influenced by the Gothic Revival "cottage" popularized by A.J. Davis and A.J. Downing. [2] It is sited on a hillside overlooking a valley and the Mississippi River. The property is the source for three springs, hence its name from 1867.
In response to these needs, a boom in apartment buildings started around 1910. One of the earliest and finest was the Bellevue Apartments, built 1913-14. [2] The Bellevue was designed and built by Charles E. Marks, a local builder. The building is four stories tall on a raised basement, all clad in red brick.
