Amsterdam is a village in northwestern Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 436 at the 2020 census . The community was founded by Dutch immigrant David Johnson and named after the city of Amsterdam , Netherlands. [ 5 ]
Amsterdam had its start when the National Road was extended to that point. [1] The town was laid out in 1830. [2] An old variant name of the community was Melgen. [3] A post office called Melgen was established in 1888, and remained in operation until 1901. [4]

The building (center), among other municipal offices and the City Commons park. Space for the new headquarters was cleared beginning on March 7, 1990. A six-story city office building and police garage on the site were razed by S.G. Loewendick and Sons. [5] Ground for the new building was broken on April 3, 1990.

The Columbus Civic Center Historic District is a historic district comprising most of the civic center. It includes Central High School (NRHP-listed, 1924), Columbus City Hall (built 1928), the former Central Police Station (1930), the Ohio Judicial Center (NRHP-listed, 1933), and the Joseph P. Kinneary United States Courthouse (NRHP-listed, 1934). [3]
