Richard Godfrey Seal (4 December 1935 – 19 July 2022) was an English organist and conductor. From 1968 to 1997 he served as organist and master of the choristers at Salisbury Cathedral, [1] which in 1991 established a separate girls choir in addition to the existing boys cathedral choir, the first cathedral to do so.
His name appears as "Metford" in his own household accounts [7] and as "Medford" in the Register of John Chandler, [8] who was Dean of Salisbury Cathedral during much of Mitford's episcopacy. Mitford, as revealed by bequests in his own and his brother Walter's wills, [ 9 ] [ 10 ] had three brothers and four sisters.

From 1954 to 1968 he was engaged at Salisbury Cathedral, as assistant organist and (in 1957) organist. He also was conductor of the Salisbury Medical and Orchestral Societies, and was joint conductor of the annual Southern Cathedrals Festival (a collaboration between the Salisbury, Chichester, and Winchester cathedrals).
