The University of Malawi was founded a few months after Malawi Independence. [1] The first enrollment consisted of 90 students in Blantyre. [1] Teaching began in 1965 in Blantyre, and within two years the Institute of Public Administration at Mpemba, the Soche Hill College of Education and the Polytechnic in Blantyre, and Bunda College in Lilongwe became colleges of the university.
The University of Malawi College of Medicine (UMCM), also Malawi College of Medicine in Blantyre, is a constituent college of the University of Malawi, the oldest and largest public university in the country. The college houses the Faculty of Medicine of the University, and is the only medical school in Malawi. [1] [2]

The University of Seychelles American Institute of Medicine (USAIM) - The agreement between the Government of the Seychelles and the University was terminated at the end of January 2011. A grace period up to April 2013 was granted, which allowed enrolled students to complete their studies.

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), sometimes referred to as the University of Southern Malawi, was established on 17 December 2012 by the Malawi University of Science and Technology Act No. 31 of 2012 as the fourth Public University in Malawi. It was officially opened in 2014 by Professor Peter Mutharika, LL.B(Hons), J.D.S.
