As a result, the French Gothic style was particularly strong in the southern Netherlands in the 13th century. Here, the transition from Romanesque to Gothic art was completed around 1250. Since Carolingian times, the Meuse region, especially the diocese of Liège, had played an important role as an intermediary between French and German book art.
