An x-ray image of a spiral fracture to the left humerus (upper arm bone) of a 27-year-old male. The injury was sustained during a fall. A spiral fracture (a.k.a. torsion fracture) is a bone fracture occurring when torque (a rotating force) is applied along the axis of a bone. [1]
Tibial plateau fractures constitute 1% of all fractures. Peak age is 30–40 years old in men and 60–70 in women. Approximately half of the people who sustain a tibial plateau fracture are aged over 50 years old. [17]
Tibia shaft fracture is a fracture of the proximal (upper) third of the tibia (lower leg bone). Due to the location of the tibia, it is frequently injured. Thus it is the most commonly fractured long bone in the body. [1]
Segond fracture – an avulsion fracture of the lateral tibial condyle; Gosselin fracture – a fractures of the tibial plafond into anterior and posterior fragments [16] Toddler's fracture – an undisplaced and spiral fracture of the distal third to distal half of the tibia [17] Fibular fracture
Delayed union: healing times vary depending on the location of a fracture and the age of a patient. Delayed union is characterised by 'persistence of the fracture line and a scarcity or absence of callus formation' on x-ray. Healing is still occurring but at a much slower rate than normal. [9]
In terms of anatomy location, fractures of finger phalanges are the most common one at the rate of 14 per 100,000 people per year in the general population, followed by fracture of tibia at 3.4 per 100,000 population per year, and distal radius fracture at 2.4 per 100,000 population per year. [5]
Open fractures take longer to heal, and infection will delay union. For tibial fractures union is generally achieved after between 3 and 6 months, [3] though time to union can be rather subjective, [4] and the dynamistion process combined with irregular appointments may interfere with these measures.
