The 2024–25 is the Vaqueros' first season as members of the Southland Conference, as on March 25, 2024, it was announced that the school had accepted an invitation to join the Southland Conference, with the move from the Western Athletic Conference becoming official on July 1, 2024.
On January 14, 2021, news broke that UTRGV had explored to create a football program for NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision level competition by 2024. The Vaqueros finished the 2022–23 season 6–23, 5–15 in WAC play to finish in a tie for tenth (last) place. [2] Due to the WAC's new Resume Seeding ranking, which is an advanced analytic developed by Ken Pomeroy that incorporated the performance of teams in both conference and non-conference games, [3] they failed to qualify for the WAC tournament, as only the top 12 teams qualify.
