Maharashtra is an Indian state that was formed on 1 May 1960 with 26 initial districts. Since then, 11 additional districts have been created, the most recent of which is Palghar district. In 1961, the Konkan region became a part of the newly formed state of Maharashtra. Prior to this it was a part of Bombay Presidency which was split to form Gujarat and Maharashtra.
