Known for its distinctive English Queen Anne terracotta facade, the building was originally developed as an apartment building by brothers James J. Goodwin and Rev. Francis Goodwin and opened in 1881.
Attached to the Convention Center is the 22-story, 409-room Marriott Hartford Hotel-Downtown, which opened in August 2005. Being constructed next to the convention center and hotel is the 140,000-square-foot (13,000 m 2) Connecticut Science Center. [269]

The Goodwin Square complex includes the office tower that bears its name, as well as the adjoining Goodwin Hotel. The tower itself is the third tallest building in Hartford and in Connecticut.

The Hotels Statler Company, Inc., was sold to Conrad Hilton 's Hilton Hotels in 1954 for $111 million, then the world's largest real estate transaction. [ 1 ] The Statler hotel in Buffalo was the first to be demolished after the Hilton acquisition, in 1968. The Statler hotel in New York became the Hotel Pennsylvania.
