Nel began playing football with the academy of Benfica before moving to Belenenses, and then finishing his development with Sporting CP in 2020. He signed his first professional contract with Sporting on 22 November 2022. [1] He was promoted to Sporting CP B in the Liga 3 for the 2023–24 season.

Born in Porto, Maga played youth football for four clubs, starting out at FC Porto and finishing his development at Vitória de Guimarães. [2] On 21 April 2022, he signed a professional contract with the latter until 2025. [3] Maga made his competitive debut on 30 January 2022, in a 3–2 Primeira Liga away loss against F.C. Vizela.
On 1 February 2019, Jota was promoted to Benfica's first team, alongside three other Benfica B players. [5] Following his Primeira Liga debut in a 4–0 home win over Chaves on 24 February, he made his European debut on 14 March, as a first choice, in a 3–0 extra time win over Dinamo Zagreb in the second leg of UEFA Europa League round of 16 .
