Cathy Rush (born Cathy Cowan; April 7, 1947) is a former basketball coach at Immaculata from 1972 to 1977. She led Immaculata to three consecutive AIAW national titles from 1972–1974. She led the Mighty Macs to six consecutive final four appearances in her six seasons with the school, attaining a 149–15 record. [1]
The name was changed to Immaculata College in 1929. [ 6 ] Founded by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Immaculata is part of the greater IHM community, which includes the neighboring House of Studies and an academy for girls (now split into two campuses, Lower School and High School).
The school's campus features the "Mustang Valley" multiuse field. This turf field, installed in 2006, is used for football, lacrosse, track, soccer, field hockey and physical education class when weather permits. A new track is also available. The school facility houses a 950-seat gymnasium, a weight room, and a designated wrestling area.
The 1972 AIAW women's basketball tournament was held on March 16–19, 1972. The host site was Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Sixteen teams participated. Immaculata College (now known as Immaculata University), coached by Hall-of-Famer Cathy Rush, was crowned national champion at the conclusion of the tournament. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Facing Maryland at Cole Field House, Immaculata won 80–48. On February 22, 1975, she played in the first women's basketball game played in Madison Square Garden. Immaculata beat Queens College 65–61. The story of the basketball team was adapted into a movie, The Mighty Macs, [4] which was released in 2011.
