On 23 November 1970, Simonas "Simas" Kudirka leapt from the Soviet mother ship Sovetskaya Litva onto USCGC Vigilant. The 400-foot (120 m) Sovetskaya Litva was anchored in U.S. waters near Martha's Vineyard Island. Kudirka was a Soviet seaman of Lithuanian nationality. The Soviets accused Kudirka of theft of 3,000 rubles from the ship's safe.
