Interstate 39 (I-39) is a highway in the Midwestern United States. I-39 runs from Normal, Illinois , at I-55 to State Trunk Highway 29 (WIS 29) in the village of Rib Mountain, Wisconsin , which is approximately six miles (9.7 km) south of Wausau . [ 2 ]
The highway collects Interstate 39, 63 miles (101 km) southeast of Tomah (near Portage). This concurrency of about 30 miles (48 km) is one of only three triplex concurrencies of the Interstate Highway System existence, the other two being in both Milwaukee and Indianapolis. I-39 continues along I-90 for the remaining 78 miles (126 km) in Wisconsin.
WIS 29 enters Wausau as a freeway, junctions with the western terminus of WIS 52 approximately 1 ⁄ 2 mile (0.80 km) west of US 51 at an eastbound off/westbound on style half-interchange. WIS 29 then immediately enters the US 51 interchange, and turns south onto and follows US 51 for five miles (8.0 km), bypassing the downtown area to the south.

The freeway continues around Portage to the west as I-39 (originally as WIS 78) to connect with I-90 and I-94 while US 51 continues along surface roads into and through Portage. In the 1990s, US 51 was designated as I-39 from its junction with WIS 29 eastbound in Wausau to where it left the freeway at exit 92 in Portage.
