Great Dane, formerly known as Great Dane Trailers, is a Chicago, Illinois based manufacturer of truck dry van, refrigerated van and flatbed semi-trailers.Established in 1900 by J.P. Wheless and T.H. McMillan as the Savannah Blowpipe Company [1] in Savannah, Georgia, it has gone on to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial truck trailers.
The company was founded in nearby Bridgeville, Pennsylvania in 1908 as Universal Rolling Mill Company, and merged with Cyclops Steel Company founded in 1884 of the Western Pennsylvania city of Titusville in 1936. [1] Led by Chairman and CEO William H. Knoell, Cyclops pursued a counter-cyclical strategy which helped it to diversify from steel.
Phoenix Iron Works (also known as Kehoe Iron Foundry) is a historic building located in downtown Savannah, Georgia, United States.A former foundry, the property is now owned by Randolph Street Development, having been revitalized as part of a redevelopment of 6.3 acres (2.5 ha) of brownfield land that had remained dormant for almost thirty years.
In 1879, Kehoe and Ellen Monahan, widow of James, were made co-owners of the business. Kehoe bought Monahan's share of the business the following year and renamed it Kehoe Iron Works. [4] [1] Around a decade later, the property was purchased by the Savannah Gas Company, [5] and Kehoe moved to a new building on the Savannah River.
