The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, often called the Portsmouth Navy Yard, is a United States Navy shipyard on Seavey's Island in Kittery, Maine, bordering Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The naval yard lies along the southern boundary of Maine on the Piscataqua River. Founded on June 12, 1800, PNS is U.S. Navy's oldest continuously operating shipyard.
The Lightship Portsmouth is a museum ship that is part of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum. Built in 1915 and began service as part of the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1916. USS Sailfish (SS-192), was a US Sargo -class submarine, originally named Squalus. As Squalus, the submarine sank off the coast of New Hampshire during test dives on 23 May 1939. The sinking drowned 26 crew members, but an ensuing rescue operation, using the McCann Rescue Chamber for the first time, saved the lives of the remaining 33 aboard.
United States F-class submarine were built by the Electric Boat in 1909. The first two, USS F-1 (SS-20) and * USS F-2 (SS-21) were built by Union Iron Works.
