Boxing Helena is a 1993 American avant-garde thriller film directed by Jennifer Lynch and starring Sherilyn Fenn, Julian Sands, and Bill Paxton. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] Before its release, the film's production was hampered by legal battles with Madonna and Kim Basinger , who both backed out of playing Helena.
The controversy surrounding that case, as well as feminist outcry over Helena's sadistic subject matter [9] [10] and accusations of nepotism, accompanied the movie's critical drubbing upon its release in 1993. In a 2009 interview with The Hollywood Interview, Lynch mentions her reactions to the critical reception of Boxing Helena:
Basinger's financial difficulties were exacerbated when she pulled out of the film Boxing Helena (1993), resulting in the studio winning an $8.9 million judgment against her. [70] Basinger filed for bankruptcy [71] and appealed the decision to a higher court, which ruled in her favor. She and the studio settled for $3.8 million instead. [69]
