The Omani territory of Madha (Arabic: مَدْحَاء, romanized: madḥāʾ) is an exclave of the Musandam Governorate, enclaved by the United Arab Emirates (UAE); inside it, there is a second-order enclave: Nahwa, which is part of the UAE Emirate of Sharjah. Madha is located halfway between the Musandam Peninsula and the rest of Oman.
While Madha chose Oman, Nahwa chose to stay loyal to Al Qawasim of Sharjah, effectively making them a counter enclave within the exclave of Madha. Following consultations between the area's tribes and Julian F. Walker, the British representative to the Trucial States, the borders were established and later finalized in 1969. [4] [5]
The northern section of the border divides the Omani exclave of Musandam from the UAE Emirates of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. This peninsula commands the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with the Oman-UAE border consisting of a series of irregular, though roughly horizontal, lines running through mountainous terrain, from the western Persian Gulf coast to the eastern Gulf of Oman coast.
Nahwa, in the UAE emirate of Sharjah is an enclave within an enclave in an enclave. Its geographical complexity makes it one of only two counter-enclaves in the world.
The origins of Al Nahwa’s unique second-order enclave status date back to the late 1930s, when local village elders invited representatives from neighboring territories. [6] In 1968, Great Britain withdrew from the region, Muscat and Oman united in 1970, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was established in 1971.
In January 2011, Oman stated that they have discovered an alleged spy network operated by the United Arab Emirates that targeted its government and military. UAE denied any involvement and expressed willingness to cooperate with any investigation. A number of Omani citizens were arrested, some of whom worked in the government.
In political geography, an enclave is a piece of land belonging to one country (or region etc.) that is totally surrounded by another country (or region). An exclave is a piece of land that is politically attached to a larger piece but not physically contiguous with it (connected to it) because they are completely separated by a surrounding foreign territory or territories.
