In 2021, the City of Austin purchased an additional 10 acres of land near Spicewood Springs Road with the intention of building a trail system connecting St. Edwards Park to Bull Creek District Park, creating a continuous trail system similar to the Barton Creek Greenbelt elsewhere in Austin.
Shoal Creek’s Hike-and-Bike Trail is the oldest trail in Austin. It was started by Janet Fish in the late 1950s, who hired a bulldozer and operator and made a trail through Pease Park. [ 7 ] [ 63 ] More of it was built by volunteers in the 1960s and improved by the City in the 1970s.
Bluff Springs was first settled in the early 1850s. A post office was established at Bluff Springs in 1853 and remained in operation until 1902, with William S. Smith serving as postmaster. Mail was then sent from Buda. In the mid-1880s, the settlement had several steam-powered gristmills, cotton gins, and a church serving 250 residents.
Three years later, Spicewood became part of the Marble Falls Independent School District. The population, which stood at around 100 in the 1970s and went up to 110 until 1990, had grown to an estimated 2,000 by 2000. [2] It went up to 4,000 in 2010. [5] Spicewood has a post office, with the ZIP code 78669. [6]
