Betty is the stenographer at the local courthouse. On the bus ride to work one day, she grows tired of the obnoxious actions of some of her fellow citizens (which she refers to as "pests"), and upon getting to the court house, puts on a judge's robe and sits in the judge's seat fantasizing in song out loud about what she'd do if she were the judge.
The origin and meaning of the lyrics are subject to debate. Historically, the "Black Betty" of the title may refer to the nickname given to a number of objects: a bottle of whiskey, a whip, or a penitentiary transfer wagon. However, in more modern song references, the term "Black Betty" alludes to a fast car or motorcycle. [2]
A Thousand Times No!! is a 1935 Fleischer Studio animated short film, starring Betty Boop. [ 2 ] This is the third of a series of Betty Boop melodrama spoofs, which also included She Wronged Him Right (1934), Betty Boop's Prize Show (1935) and Honest Love and True (1938).
The plotline features Betty as a poor woman who became a singer in a Klondike saloon to avoid starvation, at the behest of her "rat" employer. Her song is lyrically about longing for a man to take her away from trouble, and then a man (who seems to be a national park official) comes by and feels allured by her song.
Betty and Grampy are on an around-the-world flight when they are forced to crash-land on an apparently deserted island. Betty is upset with their situation, but Grampy quickly invents a number of gadgets that allow them all the comforts of home. Things again take a turn for the worse when a group of cannibals show up.
When Betty finally shows up, she explains in song that her tardiness is due to a "cold in my 'nose'". Once the race begins, it's a real thriller-spiller, with even the spectators getting into the act—and catching Betty's cold in the process ("Ah, ah, CHOO!)" [ 3 ] Eventually, Betty wins the race.
