1945. On 29 September PD343 an Avro Lancaster B.1 of No. 550 Squadron RAF went missing on a flight from Italy to the United Kingdom with 26 on board. Two Royal Air Force (RAF) Red Arrows BAE Systems Hawks, collided during a full display practice at Heraklion Crete. The pilot of one plane ejected and received moderate injuries. The aircraft crashed onto the airfield and was destroyed. The second aircraft landed safely at Heraklion Airport.
