Director Quentin Dupieux has noted that due to the inherent "emptiness" of a tire, making a remote-controlled tire was difficult as "you can’t really hide the mechanisms well". CGI effects were used for the shots of heads exploding; during filming Dupieux used practical effects, but he was unhappy with the results.
