The Diocese of Venice in Florida (Latin: Dioecesis Venetiae in Florida) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory–or diocese, of the Catholic Church in southwest Florida in the United States. It was founded on June 16, 1984. Frank Dewane has been bishop since 2007.
Bishop John Joseph Nevins (January 19, 1932 – August 26, 2014) was an American prelate of the Catholic Church.He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami in Florida from 1979 to 1984 and as the first bishop of the new Diocese of Venice in Florida from 1984 until 2007.

Dewane was ordained to the priesthood at Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay for the Diocese of Green Bay by Cardinal Adam Maida on July 16, 1988. [1] After his 1988 ordination, the diocese assigned Dewane as assistant pastor at Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Green Bay, Wisconsin, until 1991. He worked for the diocesan tribunal as well.
The first diocese in Florida was the Diocese of St. Augustine, founded in 1870. After its founding, the diocese started recruiting more priests and establishing more parishes throughout the state. It sent the Jesuit order into the southern half of Florida to found parishes and Catholic institutions in the growing cities and towns there.
