Assiniboia Downs is a Canadian horse race track on 150 ha (360 acres) [1] of land located in the Winnipeg suburb of St. James-Assiniboia. It is operated by the Manitoba Jockey Club and is the site of the annual Manitoba Derby. The track is located on the western edge of the city, near the intersection of the Perimeter Highway and Portage Avenue.
In the first half of the twentieth century, international equestrian sport was dominated by military riders. In Canada, the Canadian Militia (later renamed as the Canadian Army) was recognized by the federal government as the country's first national equestrian federation, and began the process of building the first institutional CET.
In 1934 the name of the race was officially changed to the Manitoba Derby. In 1936 the Derby was opened to all horses bred in Canada. The race was run annually at old Polo Park race track with the exception of 1937 when it was run at Whittier Park in St. Boniface. In 1941 the Manitoba Derby was changed to the Canadian Derby.
The six-furlong track opened in 1925 (replacing Speer's River Park Racetrack) under the charter of the Winnipeg Jockey Club and the charter of St. Vital Agricultural Society in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the same time, James Speers founded the Prairie Thoroughbred Breeders' Association to promote a breeding industry in Western Canada.
