In 2000, AVH also affiliated with the nearby Citizens School of Nursing, which opened in 1913 and continues to educate nursing students today. The medical college eventually became The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The nursing school, then referred to as The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Training School for Nurses, opened in 1892 with fifteen students.
